More information on OEM filters vs K&N filters
OEM S13SR Filter : bypass valve operation , 8psi begins to open, 11psi fully open anti drainback valve: yes
OEM S14SR Filter : bypass valve operation , 8psi begins to open, 11psi fully open anti drainback valve: yes
K&N squirrels 1003 (K&N S13SR/B13SE-R Reccomended Application): bypass valve operation, 8psi begins to open, 11psi fully open anti drainback valve: yes
K&N squirrels 1004 (K&N S14SR/B14SE-R Reccommended Application): bypass valve operation, 11psi begins to open, 14psi fully open anti drainback valve: yes
K&N squirrels 3001 (Big ass filter that fits S13SR Oil block): bypass valve operation, 8psi begins to open, 11psi fully open anti drainback valve: yes
K&N squirrels 2005 (same diameter ~ squirrels 1003, taller, fits S13SR): bypass valve operation, 27psi begins to open, 35psi fully open anti drainback valve: yes
K&N squirrels 2008 (same diameter ~ squirrels 1003, taller, fits S13SR): NO BYPASS VALVE BUILT IN anti drainback valve: yes
K&N squirrels 2009 (same diameter ~ squirrels 1003, taller, fits S13SR): bypass valve operation: 8psi begins to open, 11psi fully open anti drainback valve: yes
So it looks like the clear winner is the squirrels 2009 if you're looking for a larger filter for your S13SR, with identical to oem bypass valve operation.
I may still try to make atahe 3001 fit.

I find it weird that the oem size K&N specified filter for S14SR actually has a greater bypass valve than the filter that comes from the factory does. This just gives me another reason to switch to S13SR oil filter block.
next up is to see how to datalog oil pressures at various points on the engine vs rpmand load and what not.

Grab a wideband with a 0-5v input, grab a pressure transducer with same output, datalog all that sweet shit with consult and Nistune.

I don't have a nistune, i have a biki rom board, but i plugged the usb into my computer and nothing detected or turned on or anything.
then, the thing wont' even open for me because it says USB drivers aren't loaded. But when i try to install the usb drivers alone by installing the wtfever.inf , it says hardware not found.
omg. i hate this shit.

I was like one of the first dudes with a Biki in the US. Was good until lucas started to "upgrade" the software. Shit sucks now. Connection problems, drops out at high rpm/load, doesnt display all the gauges, etc. Fucking hate it.
Grab a calum realtime board or a nistune real time board and be done with it. Exactly 684983 times better than rom burning or bikishit.

Holy shit, super filter research.
I just put a Summit racing remote oil filter mount on, and put the biggest filter I could.
Probably not a good idea. lol.

K&N squirrels 1004 (K&N S14SR/B14SE-R Reccommended Application): bypass valve operation, 11psi begins to open, 14psi fully open anti drainback valve: yes So why is that worse ? the extra 3psi ?

Alright, so i got the bikirom to be detected by my USB port in XP serivce pack 2. yay. obviously. it wouldn't do it before, but no big deal.
It won't reada the ecu though. Is that because the ecu is just sitting on my desk instead of connected to a car switched 'on' ? that's my next guess.
need s13sr in tampa that i can play with.

Switched to S13SR filter housing.
It appears that S13SR filter housing has a check/bypass valve built into it already. Does that mean you can get away with not requring a filter to have a check/bypass valve? Does that mean that the s14SR filter has better flow capabilities? I'm not sure yet.
I'll figure all that out, but i know that the S13SR filter block bolts right on to the S14SR block with the same four 6mm allen key bolts.
From there, i was able to install a much larger squirrels 2009 oil filter. so rock and roll. 15w50 oil this time. Engine sits and warms up for 3-5 minutes before i move it. souds good.
My oil still appears 'break-in' -ey. Lots of golden sparkles when I shine a ligght. kinda scary.
youtubing coming soon.

Does that mean you can get away with not requring a filter to have a check/bypass valve? Yes. The VG filters don't have one because it is there. I thought I was the only one who was crazy about big filters. The one I found for my VG's is off an International Harvester tractor, holds 1.7qts and has an 8psi bypass in it. I'm not sure what pressure the block check opens at. I don't see it as a big deal since they only open when the filter is fucked up or sees high RPM while the oil is really cold. Two bypasses are better than one, it would save a lot of KA's with Fram filters.

Matt, I've been running the Mobil 1 15-50 in my SR for a long freaking time now. Now I only start it up when I'm committed to warming it up completely and beating th crap out of it but kncok on wood, no valvetrain or bottom end problems the entire racing season. I've even been using the same HKS cams now for almost 5 years. Matt what are your clearances? I just run OEM clearances. I used to run 10-40 then I noticed the oil pressure was reading a little low after a hard run or repeated flogging so I switched to 15-50 and it's been golden. I'm sure it's wearing a little more on warmup but the car literally gets started every other week or so.
