Well, I guess we now have our own little corner of home, thanks SMike.  SO, I might as well start a build thread in a place where I actually WANT too.  Notice how I never post my ish on VSC..haha.  Those guys just won't understand half my mods since to them mods are just aero, wheels, airsus.  Anything else and they scratch their head.  It's also fitting to work out the story of how the car came to be in my possession since it came from the assistance of fellow ZT members.

Ok, you guys know I sold the Z to an Aussie cat (finally a car in Australia with proper fitment, I did them a great honor..haha).  Well, I had wanted to build another vip car and decided on a G50.  Long story short, never finished it, still have parts (as statepolice! knows since he's been acquiring them from me) and decided that my project I had wanted to do before...would come now.

Not sure if any of you remember me posting up the Jaguar XJ from Garage Magical, which was actually the first demo car for J-Complete:

This was my first inspiration.  I like doing shit that most people would never normally do.  It always has extra character that way.  I started to look around for an decent XJ, but did my research on the cars too since I knew some of them to be problematic and some to be pots of gold.  I narrowed it down to two years and one model.  96-97 (X300) Vanden Plas (both of which were LWB models).  I thought how pimp would it be to have the stretched chassis.  those years do not have the main Valeo electronics like the 95 (also X300) did and they have the 4.0L inline six which is known to be almost bulletproof with decent power and tons of torque.  The search was on.  I looked high and low, locally first to no avial.  Then on eBay...but most of them were not in the greatest shape or some gay color combo.  I wanted something relatively clean inside and black, white, or silver exterior with cream leather.  I didn't care if it was too clean on the outside as long as it wasn't a rust bucket.  One day while searching the UNITED FUCKING STATES on Craigslist, I came across an ad from a professor going on sabbatical to Europe and had to sell a few of his cars.  He said...make offer.  Man, this car looked really clean in and out.  Well...I had only about 5k in the bank.  So I figured..WTH, just throw it out there anyhow and you never know.  Damned if I wasn't a lucky bastard..96' Vanden Plas spindrift white with cream leather and yes, it was a LWB.

Now the problem of checking the car out..it was in Portland.  Enter the best forum in the world...ZipTied.  I made a plea for help and the call was answered by several members...that's why this place rocks so hard.  ZT Members Catharsis (Tyler) & Allen stepped up to the plate.  I had the car checked out by Tyler who gave me the thumbs up.  It was pretty cherry.  I was getting a steal for the condition.  Here was the car still in Portland:

After making the exchange of money and what not..things were ready to roll to get the car out to Honolulu.  Thanks again to Catharsis and his friend for driving the car up to Tacoma to the shippers.  That was an awesome thing you guys did for me.  I hope I made it worth your time and when you visit..you know it's on.  So car makes it there goes out and arrives to me.  I go to pick it up...what do I find?

I actually find 3 of them..good thing I payed the extra $75 for shipping insurance.  Saved me hundreds of $$, and i got a nice new windshield..haha.  Took it to the little self wash car wash place to get the shipping mess off the car.  In this pic the LWB is very obvious with how long the rear door and glass are:

The process begins...

Ok, I didn't want that first post to be the whole damned progress.  I've actually done quite a lot and have many parts coming in as well like the typical big ticket items.  However, I wanted to make the car "ready" to mod.  There were little things here and there which needed tended too and most people would have ignored.  I'll get into this a little later when i get back..got some errands to run.  Then I'll edit this post with some of the things I've done and to what the plans are for the car..besides the obvious as shown in my sig...

I can't wait to see the progress!

This new forum is great, I'll never have to visit VSC again, since all the best builds will end up here. ;)

Refreshing to see someone do something cool instead of another LS or Q.

My wheels are Leon Harderitt Waffe, bolt pattern is 5x120.65.  Getting sent out tomorrow.  So hopefully I'll have them soon, just had to wait a little since they were custom size, offset, PCD, and options.  Auto Couture aero leaving Japan at the end of the month.

So far I'm loving the car.  It's the epitome of luxury.  The reason for those years is the LWB wasn't available in all years of Vanden Plas cars for starters (my car is a Coventry car, built in that particular UK factory), second I wanted this particular engine, and most importantly..I wanted the better electronics.

Later when I have a break I'll make a few updates to this..I've already done quite a lot.

Okay, time for some updates.  I'll start from the beginning and try to et things up to current. Might take a while..haha.

I live in Hawaii and having a car with no tint and lots of window ='s green house.  Speaking of green...time for the green tint.  It's 35% UV tint and actually keeps the car more cool than the 35% charcoal on the Benz:

It’s actually not as dark as it appears to be in these pics and when looking out from the inside it surprisingly doesn’t make everything turn green. It actually looks quite normal with just a very slight green tinge. From the outside it appears lighter green. This is a somewhat common color/use for many VIP cars in Japan…although from my understanding their tint does not have UV protection like mine does. I couldn’t find what I wanted anywhere and ended up buying a whole roll of this tint. I’ll try to take some better pics later.

When I received the car the 3rd brake light was hanging on for its’ life…by Velcro? Yes, Velcro and some kind of sticky gluey substance. Part hardened like a rock..the other part mush. I assume they first tried to use some type of super glue which was too hard and couldn’t handle any vibration..then after that failed they tried to Velcro the whole thing on by the tan enclosure…which failed as well. First things first…damage control.

I removed all the Velcro stripping which the glue backing made the most difficult and messy. The heat really did a number on it. As I started to dismantle everything I noticed exactly how it was supposed to work. There are two small tabs which need epoxied to the black surround on the glass. The super hard glue on the glass was in fact what they tried to put them up there with…but when I took it all apart they were in the slots they’re supposed to go in..just not on the glass. I then noticed 2 square holes with plastic tabs inside..push them and the light unit separates from the enclosure. Now we’re getting somewhere. I removed everything from each other and unplugged the light unit from it’s wiring harness. I totally forgot to take pics of that process, but would rather not be reminded of it..haha.

So here’s how it goes back on:

First you need to clean all the glue and crap off the black area on the glass where the tabs go. After doing so clean the tabs and the black area with rubbing alcohol. Then comes my friend Goop™!!!:

Yes, amazing Automotive Goop. I love this stuff. I rarely use normal epoxy since this stuff works on nearly anything and can handle vibration. This is what I used to apply the tabs to the glass. You’ll want to coat the tabs and then place them in their pre-measured spots (use the light unit brackets to line them up on the glass) you’ll push them on to the glasss and remove them..this puts a coat on the glass and still leaves a coat on the tabs. Wait about 2 minutes before putting them on the glass for good. As soon as you place them use your handy light unit as a template to be sure they lined up right..then when sure press the tabs down on the glass firmly. Here’s what you’ll have at that point:

You can see here how I used them as a template (remember, let the Goop™ cure for at least 48 hours before going to the next step!):

Here it is slid onto the tabs on the glass..push it down firmly, but not with tons of force..it’ll then “lock” into place:

Here you can see how the square tabs on the light unit pop into the holes on the enclosure:

So once it’s popped on (make sure to run the wiring harness in its’ little channel in the enclosure) it looks like this:

Then from the outside if lined up correctly you’ll see no light passing through or open space:

And another shot…here you can see the green tint is not as dark as the other pics make it look:

I also replaced the bulbs with 1w LED's when I did this.

As you can see my first mods are actually to get the car back in its' original pristine condition.  I'm not the type to just throw the basics on the car and call it pimp.  That shit just doesn't cut it..especially on a Vanden Plas.  Next on the plate of irritations was the center console cup holder...

One of the things that I knew about before buying the car was that part of the center console wouldn’t like to stay locked. Now, I had thought that just meant it closed but wasn’t fastening. It turns out it was the cupholder section that would pop open on it’s own…and it was spring loaded, but stil not working right. So…I had a few ideas on how to remedy this issue.

1. find a way to fix the current cupholder.

2. get one of those cupholder restore kits.

3. replace the whole upper console by finding a used one online or at a yard.

4. pray for a new upper console.

Well, it seems the feline gods must have heard my cry for help because I actually found a brand new (still in the Jaguar factory box) console in my trim code!!! What luck. A Jaguar parts dealer in Florida (Paul’s Jaguar) was my savior. So now I’ll show you how to handle this and why it hadn’t wanted to work. To remove the console is actually very easy:

Ignore my wonderful grammar below..haha.

Notice with the cupholder area opened/unlatched it barely opened. It’s spring loaded..but mine wasn’t very springy..haha. Also take note that since it was worn..and wouldn’t close right, the leather above the latch was getting worn down:

Here is why the cup holder wouldn’t stay latched:

Remove the cupholder area and you can easily see what happened:

Well, at least I have a good sample to send to Seats Restore to get a good match for the restoration of my interior leather!

Here you can see how the old cupholder even when manually opened the whole way still wasn’t all the way opened. The new unit works flawlessly and opens fully all on its’ own. Also note the color difference over the years from a new piece with new cream Connelly leather. After I clean it all up it’ll match a bit closer. The flash makes the difference even more noticeable than it is to the eye:

And here it is in all its’ glory! You can see the color hasn’t changed all that much over the years..just needs livened up.

When I first purchased the car the drivers side fog light was in less than great condition…ok, it was broken and looked like crap:

I had also noticed from the side that worked that the fogs were not very bright and they had a cutoff that blocked the light to the sides…which is kind of what I like fog lights to do. They don’t aim up, so they aren’t blinding other drivers. Here they are inside the custom opening in the old lens:

Removing them is pretty easy..but first you need to remove the fog light housings. There is a black trim ring which surrounds the housing. There are four small clips around it holding it on by little nubs. I use a thin flat head screw driver to gently pry those outwards and then off..it’s quite easy. After those are out you’ll see grooves that go back to where the tabs are which hold the housing in place:

then just remove the power plug on the backside and you’ve got them out. Repeat the same procedure for the opposite side if you need to remove them both.

On the glare guards there are 4 tabs which need to be bent back after removing the bulb from the housing..once bent they can be finagled out with pliers:

Then once out it should look like so:

This is a good time to clean out dust and dirt that has collected over time. I made a “tool” out of a metal coat hanger, cue tip, and duct tape. The rest of this cleaning procedure is self explanatory…haha:

Here is the completed housing on the car:

Now with yellow halogen, nice but not very bright:

Lets do something about that in the tune of 3000k HID lighting…

WAY better…there is no weird glare up to blind drivers as you can see it shines the ground and sides on a low level due to the housing shape and angle. You can hardly tell the headlights are on..haha. Now to do the tri-bar HID headlight retrofit!!! Just waiting on one more part and then it’s on!!
