100k on a well maintained duramax is nothing. This thing if anything is going to run buttery and you found a good deal if you scored it for that much. What year?

It's an 04.5 and it's a 4x4 4 door. I tried it out yesterday to pickup a buddies car, diesel was certainly the way to go. 12mpg and it barely noticed anything was hitched to it. Cruise control doesn't even wind out the motor like a gasser would.  I'm pretty happy with it. It's ugly as sin GOLD but it was a "loved" truck and I only own it to do one thing: Haul the fun stuff.

I'm also happy that I own a diesel now because I get to educate myself a little more on it. Diesel engines have always been a little bit of a mystery to me.

Wait, 12 mpg?  Is that normal?

My friend's 06 Megacab Ram 2500 gets 19-20 actual towing highway with his huge Wrangler on an open trailer.  I kind of thought these were all similar in the mileage range, is that not the case?

My truck which is chipped gets 22 unloaded 15 loaded pulling a 9k enclosed doing 70-80mph. Something sounds wrong there when I first picked mine up it had a bad injector and the milage was down around 17 unloaded.

On the 12mpg,
I'm just going by what the information center was giving me not actual calculations. Is this thing accurate? Who knows what it's getting until I get on a solid road trip. I was pulling a 28ft enclosed with a 35-40mph head wind on Saturday.

Make sure the maintenance is current on that beast matt and go from there. 12mpg is alright but it could be better, and it will definitely improve with a chip.

Does yours have the Allison trans?

Also the indicator that something maybe up is the difference in your loaded vs unloaded mpgs like brad said. My 2500HD does around that and it's a gasser and lifted a bunch so maybe bring it in to chevy an have them give it a look through. Should only be like $100 or so.

I have an Edge w/ attitude programmer on it now, I really have not messed with the settings at all yet.  Yes it's an Allison Trans.  According to the Duramax forum it's right on par. With the open car trailer im sure it would be a lot better.

12 MPG with enclosed is correct, you can hypermile it higher trying hard, but mine gets around that with enclosed, 15-17 with open, and 18-20 unloaded.  I drive lightly on the pedal though.  You can cut those by30% or more if you use the gas pedal alot.

Yeah but with this on it...I think it's a lot closer than an S-chassis that's significantly lower than the truck.

duramaxdiesels.com is pretty good if you're on that one. Well aslong as it's running well and kicking ass that's all that matters. I'm sure theres a recipe for these dudes getting insane mpg's. Wheres stewbro, I want to know what kind he's getting with his dmax thats lifted all sick.

This just came to mind your trucks 4wd right matt? Mine is 2wd which is going to make a pretty sizable difference. Be careful with that programmer I'm not sure how open they are with tuning fuel and such but I know on the dodge forums Ive read a handful of dudes tuning their trucks with handhelds and melting down pistons. Post some pics up of the truck

programmer is fine up to 3 or 4 iirc, anything over that and you risk grenading your tranny.  you wont do anything to the motor
